DAY 114

Today we woke up early for breakfast, it was raining but we got a glimpse at the first iceberg.

Our route up to this point.

Since it was raining and freezing cold we thought it would be better to take in the views from the sauna.

After the sauna, we went back on deck to catch more views and celebrate crossing the Antarctic Circle with the ship’s crew “baptizing” us with ice water and a shot of Aquavit (it was a very rough shot).

After our passing into the Antarctic Circle, we got our first site of land around Detaille Island but the poor weather conditions didn’t allow us to do our planned landing. After waiting for the weather to improve they finally announce we would do our planned cruising around Crystal Sound (66°23′S 66°30′W). So we rushed off to get dressed for our first outing, it took about 15mins to get layers, rain pants, boots, jackets, hats, buffs, and life vests on. Then we headed to the tender pit to get loaded into the zodiacs for cruising.

There wasn’t much wildlife to be seen but we enjoyed the views and got to our first Adelie penguin, there was a lone penguin hanging out on a rocky outcropping.

After cruising around for about an hour we headed back to the ship and got warmed up and dried off. We then worked out in the gym on board and had a relaxing dinner. then we to bed early because our group was the first landing group in the morning.
